Minor Program
Students interested in pursuing a minor in Urban and Community Studies should think in terms of completing appropriate 1000-level courses in the various social sciences as preparation for advanced courses in their program in Urban and Community Studies. These should include Urban Studies 1200 (cross-listed as Geography 1200) and might well include some of the following courses: Economics 1201, Political Science 1602, Sociology 1001 and Statistics 1000 or 1100.
Requirements for the Minor
15 credit hours of courses selected from the Urban and Community Studies major, as follows:
A) Required course:
- Urban Studies 2000: Introduction to Urban Studies
B) Two courses from different departments from among the following:
- Economics 3439: Urban and Regional Economics
- Geography 3200: Urban Geography
- History 3541: History of Urban America
- Political Science 3632: Urban Politics
- Political Science 3842: Public Administration
- Sociology 3425: Social Welfare and Social Work
- Sociology 3901: Urban Sociology
- Urban Studies 3000: Urban Anthropology
C) Two additional courses selected from among the following:
- Any additional course listed in B above
- Any of the following courses:
- Economics 3431: Public Finance
- Geography 4200: Advanced Urban Geography
- Geography 4210: Urban and Regional Planning
- History 3564: African-American History Since 1865
- Interdepartmental 3584: Seminar in Urban Problems (taken as part of the Urban Semester Program)
- Political Science 2622: State and Local Government
- Political Science 3847: The Policy-Making Process
- Sociology 3903: Urban Problems
- Sociology 3907: City Life
- Sociology 3911: Communities
